Serving students on the South Plains of West Texas

James Ottaberry is a Certified Teacher of Students with Visual Impairments (CTVI) as well as a Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS). As an independent contractor, he provides specific instructional and supportive services to students who are visually impaired or blind that enable them to be successful in the classroom and the community.

Mr. Ottaberry (sometimes referred to as "The VI Guy" or otherwise known as "Mr. O") travels to the students' assigned schools to address the unique learning needs created by a visual impairment as well as provide direct and/or consultative services relating to the vision loss. Ottaberry works with students and their teachers to insure that classroom materials are accessible for students with various vision limitations. Some changes are fairly simple such as enlarging papers and ordering large print textbooks while others require access to specialized equipment.

As an Orientation and Mobility Specialist, he teaches children and adults who have a visual impairment to know where they are, where they are going and how to get there safely and efficiently. While instruction mainly takes place at school, the student may also need ideas for home, work, or in the community. Ottaberry works with students, teachers, and administrators to accomplish these goals.

The overall goal is to provide the skills and put the plans in place so that the students will have an increased opportunity for success - in the classroom, at home and in life.
